- Project Name: Coconut Oil Lamps
- Coconut oil burns at about the same rate as kerosene but costs much less (kerosene is $3.30/litre in village stores) and burns without the smoke, or smell of kerosene.
- Lamp is easy to light, safe
- Easy to construct with non-electric, hand tools
- Inexpensive, target price $20 or less (labour @ $2/hr)
- Simple design
- Made of readily available materials, with minimal fabrication, assembly and repair outside of the village, or in urban centers, or foreign countries
Target Benefit
Standard kerosene lamps cannot burn with coconut oil and so if we wish to substitute oil for kerosene, there is a need to develop coconut oil lamps for village use. The lamps need to provide for three types of lighting needs; (i) basic background indoor lighting, (ii) large lighting for open areas, or to fully light a room, and (iii) high intensity, directed light for reading.Features
